Moving to Massachusetts and bringing your firearms with you….
First and foremost, Welcome to Massachusetts!
Please keep in mind that in Massachusetts an Assault Weapons Ban and Large Capacity Feeding Device Ban are in effect.
New Mass residents may bring their firearms, rifles, and shotguns into the state. Those firearms, rifles, and shotguns must remain secured within the home.
- New Residents have 60 days to apply for and receive an FID or LTC (Ch.140 § 129C).
- Such firearms may not be transported outside the home until proper licensing is obtained.
- (Ch.140 § 129C) Does not cover the possession of assault weapons, large capacity rifles, shotguns and large capacity magazines. Proper licensing required. COMMONWEALTH vs. CLINT A. CORNELIUS.
60 days is a small window of time to get the application prerequisite course work completed, application submitted and LTC/FID in hand. The process should take no more than 40 days, but some cities and towns in the Commonwealth may take a bit longer.
